Look & Feel Your Best This Festive Season

The holidays are definitely my favourite time of the year, but sometimes it can be challenging to keep your fitness goals in check. I’ve often referenced the infamous “festive 15” because holiday treats and free-flowing eggnog can often get the best of your waistline. This holiday I’ve teamed up with Sport Chek to share some quick tips to help you look and feel your best this festive season (all while staying on track with your fitness).

Nutrition: Naughty or Nice

There are a few ways to stay off the naughty list when it comes to nutrition during the holidays. The most common advice includes eating a healthy snack before attending a festive party, so that you don’t arrive starving at your fam jam only to go hard at the buffet. Other examples include limiting sugary holiday cocktails, being savvy when it comes to second helpings and finally, never regret anything you eat! I’m serious - do yourself a favour and don’t jump onto the treadmill trying to work off your grandma’s buttery mashed potatoes. It’s important to enjoy the holidays with family and food and not to feel bad about anything. The key is try and do your best to make smart and healthy nutrition decisions where possible.

Stay Fit & Festive

It’s a busy time of the year and you might not have the usual hour to make it to your boot camp or yoga class, but that doesn’t mean you ditch fitness altogether. Even if it’s 15 minutes in your family room, get a short workout in! What I find works best is to schedule your workouts first thing in the morning before the festive frenzy kicks in. Another great option is to get active with your family outdoors, which makes for fun holiday memories and adventures!

To help you stay even more motivated, I’m a big believer in using a fitness tracker, like the Fitbit. There’s a huge selection at Sport Chek and mine never fails to keep me accountable. It literally tracks every part of my day – from my exercise to my sleep patterns.

Dress The Part

Partnering with Sport Chek this festive season made “dressing the part” easier and a lot more fun. Plus, there is something to be said about new workout gear keeping you motivated to stick to your fitness goals. The thing I love about Sport Chek is that there are so many different brands to choose from and they are all brands I love. You’ll be happy to know that you can find active wear for the kiddies there too! Now the whole gang can be suited in fresh new gear for those family activities I mentioned earlier.

This holiday you can find us getting through our festive fitness sessions decked out in Under Armour and Nike. There are just so many pieces I love for my daughter and myself. Of course, layers are always a good idea because if you’re like us, your brisk walk or hike outdoors will have you sweaty in no time! And after it’s all said and done, you can head to your holiday party that evening feeling good about getting movement in before the feast!

Again, don’t be too hard on yourself this season, but do make a commitment to be active. Schedule the time in your calendar, get outdoors with family or buddy up with a mommy friend and get in your workouts. There is no doubt you will be feel better, your mind/body will be happy and maybe (just maybe) Santa will be more inclined to fulfil your wish list!
