Prevention Is the Best Form of Self-Care
When was the last time you booked a health check-up?
Not because you were feeling unwell. Not because something felt off. Just because it was time.
If you're like many people, it's probably been longer than you'd like to admit.
We schedule work meetings, make dinner reservations, plan vacations months in advance, and keep up with regular maintenance for our homes and cars. Yet when it comes to our own health, it's surprisingly common to wait until something doesn't feel right before taking action.
The reality is that preventive healthcare often takes a back seat, not because we don't care, but because life gets busy. When you feel healthy, it's easy to assume everything is fine. But feeling well and knowing you're well aren't always the same thing.
What is preventive healthcare?
Preventive healthcare focuses on protecting your health before illness develops or worsens. Rather than waiting for symptoms to appear, it's about understanding your current health, identifying potential risk factors, and making informed decisions that support your long-term well-being.
Depending on your age, lifestyle, and personal health history, preventive care may include:
Annual physical exams
Blood work and lab testing
Blood pressure and heart health assessments
Cancer screenings
Vision and hearing exams
Nutrition and lifestyle consultations
Mental health check-ins
These aren't appointments to fear—they're opportunities to understand your body better and establish a baseline for your health.
Why it matters more than we think
Many common health conditions develop gradually and don't always present obvious symptoms in the beginning.
High blood pressure is often called the "silent killer" because many people don't realize they have it until it's discovered during a routine check-up. The same can be true for high cholesterol, certain vitamin deficiencies, prediabetes, and other conditions that can often be managed more effectively when identified early.
Preventive care isn't about expecting the worst. It's about giving yourself the best chance to stay healthy.
Early detection can lead to earlier intervention, better outcomes, and, perhaps most importantly, peace of mind.
Redefining self-care
When we hear the phrase self-care, we often think of things like spa days, vacations, journaling, or taking a break from work. While those moments absolutely have value, I've started thinking about self-care a little differently.
Real self-care is also booking the appointment you've been putting off.
It's making time for movement because it helps your body feel strong—not because you're trying to earn your meals.
It's getting enough sleep because rest is productive, too.
And it's choosing to learn more about your health before something forces you to.
The small decisions we make consistently often have the biggest impact over time.
My perspective shifted
Recently, I had the opportunity to complete an annual complete health assessment. Going into it, I wasn't expecting anything to be wrong. I simply wanted a clearer understanding of where my health stands today. Taking a proactive approach gave me valuable insights into my overall health and reinforced something I think many of us need to hear: taking care of yourself isn't only about responding to problems. It's about creating the opportunity to prevent them in the first place.
It reminded me that knowing your health is just as important as feeling healthy.
A reminder for this month
As we head into the final stretch of the year, consider this your reminder to check in with yourself—not just mentally, but physically, too.
If it's been a while since your last check-up, this might be the perfect time to schedule one. Whether it's your annual physical, routine blood work, or a comprehensive health assessment, every proactive step you take today is an investment in your future. Because the goal isn't simply to live longer. It's to live well. And one of the best ways to do that is by taking care of your health before you need a reason to. 💚

We only get one body, and it carries us through every chapter of our lives. Treat it with the same care and intention you give to your dreams, your career, and the people you love.
